About Sgurr na Banachdich

Sgurr na Banachdaich, smallpox peak in Gaelic and also written Sgurr na Banachdich, stands at the western edge of the Cuillin ridge on Skye, making it the most westerly Munro. The name is said to come from the pitted, marked look of the rock in Coire na Banachdaich below.

The line from Glen Brittle by Coire nan Eich is one of the least technical ways onto a major Cuillin summit, since the main route does not strictly demand the use of hands, though the ground is rough and steep in places and navigation on the descent can be awkward in poor visibility. Every other approach involves scrambling: the Sgurr nan Gobhar spur from Glen Brittle means very steep scree and a narrow ridge, while the remaining routes come along the main ridge from neighbouring peaks and passes, the South Ridge offering attractive scrambling over several subsidiary tops.
