About Sgurr a' Mhadaidh

Sgùrr a' Mhadaidh sits in the Black Cuillin of Skye, its Gaelic name meaning peak of the dog or fox. Like the rest of the range it is formed of gabbro, a rough rock that gives unusually good grip.

The mountain has four separate summits. Only the highest, at 918 metres, is within reach of scramblers; the other three call for rock-climbing skill and equipment. The least demanding line to the top goes by the col of An Dorus, the Door, most readily gained from Glen Brittle.

Sgurr a' Mhadaidh is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Sgurr Dearg - Inaccessible Pinnacle (986 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 845 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
