About Sgurr Mhic Choinnich

Sgùrr MhicChoinnich is a Black Cuillin peak on Skye, built like its neighbours largely of gabbro and carrying almost no vegetation. It takes its name from the mountain guide John MacKenzie, who was on the first ascent in 1887 with Charles Pilkington, James Heelis and Horace Walker.

The usual approach climbs the An Stac scree out of Coire Lagan to the bealach between this peak and Sgùrr Dearg, from where the north ridge gives an airy Grade 2 scramble, exposed by British standards. The south face is a different proposition, dropping sheer to the bealach with Sgùrr Thearlaich; the least severe line up it, King's Chimney, is graded V.
