About Meugher
Meugher is a hill in the Yorkshire Dales, England, in a remote stretch of country between Wharfedale and Nidderdale, just under a kilometre outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park but within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its conical peak is topped by an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar, and it has been described as perhaps the remotest and least inviting summit in the Dales. Meugher Dyke drains its southern flank, Back Stean Gill the eastern, and Cross Gill the western and northern flanks, all within the Nidderdale drainage area.
No public rights of way approach the summit, but the hill has been open access land since the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000; a shooting track from near Lofthouse now comes within about 430 metres of the top, and a public footpath from Middlesmoor to Conistone passes a mile to the north-west. First recorded as Magare in 1120, the name probably comes from the Old Norse mjór haugr, meaning 'small hill'.

Finding the summit
ground is 10cm higher than flush bracket on trig point (SE 04411 70417).
The recorded summit point is no feature: ground 10m NW of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to
Meugher is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Great Whernside (704 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 539 m.
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
