About Little Whernside
Little Whernside is a 605-metre hill in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire, lying just under three miles north-east of Great Whernside. It sits on the boundary between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, forming part of the watershed between Coverdale and Nidderdale, and its highest point is marked by a cairn a few metres inside the national park.
The hill stands on private land, and no public right of way reached the summit until 1997, when a footpath was established along the ridge connecting it with Great Whernside. Following the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 it became open access land, and an ascent can be made from Scar House Reservoir.

Which hill this one belongs to
Little Whernside is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Great Whernside (704 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 527 m.
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
