About Glamaig - Sgurr Mhairi

Sgùrr Mhairi is the summit of Glamaig, the most northerly of Skye's Red Hills, standing just east of Sligachan. From many directions it presents an almost perfect cone of scree, though a bealach — the Bealach na Sgàirde, or Pass of the Scree — connects it to the rest of the range. It is one of only two Corbetts on Skye.

In 1889 a Gurkha, Harkabir Tharpa, climbed Glamaig in 37 minutes, completing the round trip from sea level at the bar of the Sligachan Inn in 55 minutes. He is said to have run it barefoot, and the record survived until the 1980s despite attempts by Olympians including Chris Brasher in the 1950s.

One line of ascent from Sligachan goes straight up the scree, an unrelenting gradient on slippery ground. Walkers may return the same way or carry on south along the Red Cuillin ridge.
