About Clipyn Du

Clipyn Du is a 582-metre mountain in northern Powys, Wales, one of the higher summits of the area, located a few miles north of Plynlimon (Pumlumon). With a topographic prominence of 124 metres, it qualifies as a HuMP.

A steep-sided escarpment on the hill bears the name Tarren Bwlch-gwyn, and the lake of Glaslyn lies close by. A natural cleft in the rock is known as Siambwr Trawsfynydd, where Owain Glyndŵr is thought to have camped in 1401 before the Battle of Mynydd Hyddgen.

Which hill this one belongs to

Clipyn Du is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Pumlumon Fawr (752 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 458 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
