About Werfa

Werfa is the summit of Mynydd Llangeinwyr, the highest hill in the county borough of Bridgend in the South Wales coalfield. The hill runs as a long ridge from north to south, with the valley of Cwm Garw on its western side and Cwm Ogwr Fawr on its eastern, and its highest point, a flat dome at 568 metres, carries a trig point and prominent masts.

A secondary trig point stands at a height of 530 metres near the ancient cairn of Carn-yr-hyrddod, and the hill takes its name from the village of Llangeinor beneath its southern end.

Which hill this one belongs to

Werfa is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Craig y Llyn (600 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 480 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
