About Stiperstones
The Stiperstones (Welsh: Carneddau Teon) is a distinctive hill in Shropshire, England, and the county's second-highest after Brown Clee Hill. Along its summit ridge, some eight kilometres long, stand several jagged rock outcrops that show up silhouetted against the sky.
The quartzite of the ridge formed around 480 million years ago. During the last Ice Age the Stiperstones stood at the eastern edge of the Welsh ice sheet; the hill itself escaped glaciation while glaciers filled the surrounding valleys, and intense freezing and thawing shattered the quartzite into jumbled scree around the residual rocky tors.
