About Shillhope Law

Shillhope Law is a 501-metre hill in the southern Cheviots, a range in Northumberland, England, lying within Northumberland National Park. It shares the character of its neighbours — a small summit, steep grassy flanks dropping into deeply cut valleys — but, unlike them, the ridge running north to the higher dome of The Cheviot is cut by a low col at 343 metres, giving the hill enough relative height to rank as a Marilyn.

Access is eased by the narrow road that climbs Coquetdale from Alwinton to the base of the hill. The hill can be climbed easily, if steeply, from the farms of Barrowburn and Shillmoor on its western side, and the two routes combine into a circular walk of about five miles. The Otterburn Training Area lies on the far side of the valley, and the hill's northern slopes can themselves see training, though never with live ammunition.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

natural summit might be 15m SW at NT 87302 09660 or 10m S at NT 87311 09660.

The recorded summit point is trig pillar in shelter above ancient cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
