About Ryder's Hill

Ryder's Hill, at 515 metres, is the highest point on the southern part of Dartmoor in Devon, England, and its summit offers good views over the southern moor. On the top are two standing stones and a low cairn surmounted by a triangulation pillar; one of the stones, Petre's Bound Stone, marks the meeting point of the three civil parishes of Dartmoor Forest, Holne and Buckfastleigh.

The summit cairn, though not very prominent, has an important history: it was one of the boundary markers of the Forest of Dartmoor mentioned in the Perambulation of 1240, and has been known as 'Knattleborough', in various spellings, since at least the seventeenth century. The hill can be reached by walking up Holne Ridge from Combestone Tor, past Horn's Cross, a distance of about three kilometres.

Dartmoor commons: confirmed right to backpack camp

Following Darwall v Dartmoor National Park Authority [2025] UKSC 20 (21 May 2025), s.10(1) of the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985 confers a public right to pitch tents or otherwise make camp overnight on the Dartmoor commons, as camping is a form of open-air recreation. This applies to the commons (not the whole National Park) — follow the park authority's backpack-camping map and code.

Which hill this one belongs to

Ryder's Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to High Willhays (622 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 406 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
