About Moel y Gaer

Moel y Gaer is a summit of Llantysilio Mountain in Denbighshire, north-west of the town of Llangollen. Its name — Welsh for 'bald hill of the fortress' — refers to the Iron Age hillfort that occupies the top.

The fort holds scheduled-monument status, classified as a prehistoric defensive hillfort, and is looked after as part of the Heather and Hillforts Project — a scheme covering six hillforts altogether: the four most southerly forts of the Clwydian Range, this one and Caer Drewyn.

Which hill this one belongs to

Moel y Gaer is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Moel y Gamelin (577 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 466 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
