About Gulvain

Gulvain, or Gaor Bheinn in Gaelic, sits in Lochaber in the Northwest Highlands, between Loch Arkaig to the north and the road running west from Fort William to the south. Most approaches begin from that road.

In plan the mountain forms a rough letter Y. Two tops are joined by a ridge running northeast to southwest, the northern one standing six metres above the southern. Crags fall away at either end of the ridge and the flanks drop steeply on both sides. The rock is banded granite.

The name is unsettled. Ainmean-Aite na h-Alba traces it to Gadhail Bheinn, mountain of the hunting dogs, from gadhar. An alternative reading gives Gaothail or Gaothar Bheinn, windy mountain.
