About Cefn Croes

Cefn Croes is a 573-metre mountain in the Cambrian Mountains of Ceredigion, west Wales, south of the A44 road between Aberystwyth and Llangurig. Nearby stands Y Glog (Draws Drum), a hill classed as a HuMP.

The mountain gives its name to the Cefn Croes Wind Farm built upon it: construction began in February 2004 and was completed in spring 2005, when its 39 turbines started producing electricity, with a maximum installed capacity of 58.5 megawatts. The operator's community development contributions are shared between the Pontarfynach and Blaenrheidol community councils.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

summit is 170m NW of windfarm plaque (SN 80900 79819).

The recorded summit point is no feature. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Cefn Croes is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Pen y Garn (611 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 528 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
