About Ben Wyvis - Glas Leathad Mor

Glas Leathad Mor is the high point of Ben Wyvis, the Easter Ross mountain known in Gaelic as Beinn Uais. Ben Wyvis is not a single cone but a winding, undulating ridge running roughly north to south for about 5 km, and Glas Leathad Mor tops it at 1,046 m. The hill lies north-west of Dingwall, in Highland council area and the county of Ross and Cromarty.

Geologically the ridge consists of Moine pelitic gneiss, and it reads as a whale-back above the farmland of Strathconon, prominent in views across the district. Its conservation status is unusual: National Nature Reserve, Special Protection Area, Special Area of Conservation and SSSI. The woolly hair-moss carpeting the summit plateau matters particularly, providing nesting ground for dotterel, with the mountain holding at least 2.4 per cent of the British breeding population.
