About Beinn Dorain
Few Scottish hills have a stronger literary claim than Beinn Dorain. The Gaelic form, Beinn Dobhrain, is read as 'hill of the otter', and the mountain rises above Bridge of Orchy in Argyll and Bute within the Breadalbane district of the Highlands.
Duncan Ban MacIntyre, who grew up in the district and worked here as a gamekeeper, made the hill the subject of his best-known Gaelic poem, Moladh Beinn Dobhrainn, or 'In Praise of Ben Doran'. The poem has since had a second life in music: Ronald Stevenson set it in 2007 for full chorus, chamber chorus, symphony orchestra and chamber orchestra, drawing on both MacIntyre's Gaelic and Hugh MacDiarmid's English translation. The premiere took place in Glasgow on 19 January 2008, with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Opera Chorus, Glasgow University Chapel Choir and The Edinburgh Singers.
