About An Cliseam

An Cliseam, usually anglicised as the Clisham, is the highest mountain in the Outer Hebrides and the only Corbett in the archipelago, standing on North Harris. Walkers here often meet light rain and boggy, muddy ground.

Several paths lead to the top; the quickest starts from the car park at the bridge on the A859 between Stornoway and Tarbert, southeast of the hill. In clear conditions the summit takes in the whole Clisham horseshoe: An t-Isean, Mulla bho Dheas, Mulla bho Thuath and Mullach an Langa. Coire Dubh Slabs shows from the southwest side and Aonaig Mhòr from the north. A longer traverse of the horseshoe starts on the northern part of the Abhainn Scaladail and follows it upstream to the foot of the Mullach an Langa ridge.

The recorded summit point is rock. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
